Borers & Turningtables

SECOND-HAND BORING MACHINES AND TURNTABLES

How do boring machines work?

The primary functions of boring machines or borers are to enlarge, straighten, or increase the concentricity of a previously manufactured hole. Drilled or cored holes are rarely perfectly straight or round, given irregularities in both the tools and the materials. The boring process (also referred to as internal turning) takes place with the workpiece in a fixed position and the tool rotating within the hole.

Boring mills with multiple heads can work on several surfaces simultaneously, and the tools—varying in size and material—are available to suit a range of applications. Standard boring tools can turn work of over three metres.

The precision of the boring process is essential to the manufacture of many products: engine cylinders, gun barrels, and very large parts are classic applications.

Computerised or manual?

Although many borers today are computer numerical controlled (CNC), some machinists find the manually controlled mills more flexible and cost-effective, especially if they do one-time custom jobs. For large-scale production, a CNC borer offers more hands-free operation.

Types of borers

Horizontal boring machines fall into the table-type and floor-type categories. The former mills are suitable for medium- to large-sized parts, while the floor models are designed for especially long or tall workpieces, which today reach up to six metres.

A vertical boring machine features a headstock that sits on the floor and a lathe turned on end. It’s principally used for work that exceeds sixty centimetres.

Jig borers are versatile and high-precision tools of various sizes used, as the name implies, for machining jigs and fixtures.

What about rotary tables for the horizontal borers and other machine tools?

A rotary table precisely positions the workpiece during production. It typically rotates around a fixed axis, either horizontal or vertical, enabling the operator to bore, drill, or cut work at exact intervals. Some rotary tables are fitted with index plates, and some employ dividing plates, which enable regular positioning at divisions for which indexing plates are not available.

Other variables in your choice of turntable will be dictated by the application. Turntable features include dimensions, weight capacity, length of travel, turning radius (and/or tilting angle), and power.

Well-known brands and manufacturers of second-hand borers and turntables?
