Drilling machines

Second-hand drilling machines

What is a drilling machine?

A drilling machine, also known as a drill press, is a tool primarily used for making cylindrical holes in a variety of materials, such as metal, wood, plastic, stone, and so forth. In addition to basic drilling, these machines can also do counterboring, countersinking, reaming, and tapping.

Although humans were using rudimentary manual drills as early as 35,000 BCE, we credit a pair of Australian men with the invention of the first handheld electric power drill in 1889. Nowadays we see an impressive range of drilling machines to address a host of complex manufacturing needs.

What are the different types of drilling machines on the market today?

The basic bench-and-column drill press consists of a base, a central column, a table (on which the workpiece rests), and the head, which includes the motor, the controls, and the drill bit itself. The motor, of course, rotates bits of varying shapes and sizes, driving the bit into the workpiece to create the hole.

On a radial drilling machine (or radial arm press), the drill head is mounted on a moving arm, allowing it a greater range of movement. The head can be rotated and height-adjusted, making this one of the most versatile drill presses.

Multi-axis drills (also known as multi-spindle drills) can simultaneously drill a number of holes in one workpiece.

Deep-hole drilling machines are capable of processing particularly slender workpieces and can drill holes whose length is many times longer than their diameter. Gun-barrel manufacture is a notable application for this type of drill.

A somewhat recent addition to the fabrication marketplace is the hybrid milling machine and drill press, which combines both functions in one machine.

Computerized or manual?

A drilling machine can be controlled manually or computer-driven. Computerized Numeral Control (CNC) drill presses are becoming the standard in mass-production facilities.
